Prefabrication with Smart Dynamic Casting , ETH Zurich, 2016-2018
Smart Dynamic Casting (SDC) is a continuous robotic slipforming process that enables to prefabricate material optimized load-bearing concrete structures. In this automated process a dynamic formwork significantly smaller than the structures produced is continuously moved and filled with concrete, in a velocity that enables to shape the concrete in the delicate phase when it changes from a soft to a hard material. During the first phase of SDC architectural scaled columns proved that concrete can be shaped in its delicate transition from soft to hard in a robotic process (see Smart Dynamic Casting). The second research phase, a suitable setup for prefabrication was developed for the fabrication of non-standard loadbearing elements. The current research is dedicated to the development of a fully automated robotic slip forming process, for the production of reinforced façade elements with a minimal cross section of 70 x 100 mm for the DFAB HOUSE at the Empa premises in Dübendorf, Switzerland. This includes developing a flexible formwork system that enables to shape concrete of minimal dimensions in a slipping process -, and to automate the material processing in which the hydration of the material can be controlled.
