Robotic Wire Cutting, Payerne, Vaud, 2015
Swisspearl® Summerschool 2015
Robotic Wire Cutting is a two-week design and building workshop focusing on the development of novel façade typologies and their digital design and fabrication through 1:1 scale prototypes. The elements of the façade were materialised in cement composite Swisspearl®, moulded from robotically-cut bespoke polystyrene blocks. The resulting geometric possibilities – paired with machinic speed and efficiency – of this multi-robot fabrication process at hand and the overall setting directly in the production facilities of Eternit (Schweiz) AG allowed for a comprehensive investigation into the architectural potentials of automated cutting by an integral approach to computational design, simulation and physical prototyping. As such, participants gained fundamental knowledge in digital fabrication, and, in particular, learned to describe their designs using algorithmic models, generate data for the robotic fabrication and validate their investigations through 1:1 automatically fabricated mock-ups.

The results of the two-week design and building workshop "Robotic Wire Cutting" will be exhibited - together with the premiere of a comprehensive film documentation by Marc Schwarz - at the Architekturforum Zurich from February 24, 2016 to March 10, 2016.
